IMHO it is not a good idea to keep all the e-mails in an e-mail application.
It is like keeping all incoming snail mail in an entry hall.
Even if all e-mails are sorted into folders and subfolders there is a good chance that it will become cluttered over time.
It is much better to keep e-mails and attachments saved into organised folders and subfolders on a file system and have them backed up.
I personally do not keep any e-mails older than 3 month in my mailbox and I think it can be reduced to 2 weeks.
